L'imperatore Marco Aurelio (Richard Harris, "Giochi di potere", "Gli spietati"), ormai morente, gli chiede però un'altra "impresa": assumere il comando dell'impero al suo posto. Geloso di questo speciale trattamento l' erede al trono Commodo (Joaquin Phoenix, "8mm", "Da morire") comanda l'uccisione del generale e della sua famiglia. Sfuggito miracolosamente alla morte, Maximus viene ridotto in schiavitù a allenato come gladiatore per i combattimenti nell'arena Storyline Maximus is a powerful Roman general, loved by the people and the aging Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Before his death, the Emperor chooses Maximus to be his heir over his own son, Commodus, and a power struggle leaves Maximus and his family condemned to death. The powerful general is unable to save his family, and his loss of will allows him to get captured and put into the Gladiator games until he dies. Il risultato è un lavoro di quasi un anno sviluppato da quattro troupe differenti: una a Londra, una in Marocco, una a Malta e una di base costretta a spostarsi di luogo in luogo. Le ricostruzioni sono state fatte con dovizia di particolari, a partire dalle armi utilizzate in battaglia, per chiudere con l'abbigliamento sia dei legionari che dei gladiatori che di tutti gli altri personaggi del film. Non potendolo girare nel vero Colosseo, gli autori hanno pensato di ricostruirlo almeno in parte visto che i tempi di lavorazione cominciavano ad allungarsi troppo; per completare il tutto il computer è ormai il miglior amico dell'uomo e così sono state ricostruite le parti mancanti, sono stati aumentati gli spettatori presenti e sono stati realizzati scorci dell'antica Roma.
