Hij gaat hier de concurrentie aan met een andere toppiloot, Iceman (Kilmer). Na een tragische gebeurtenis realiseert Maverick zich dat het leven toch keihard kan zijn en twijfelt of hij nog verder wil gaan met vliegen. Maverick struggles to be the best pilot, stepping on the toes of his other students and in a different way to Charlie, a civilian instructor to whom he is strongly attracted.
