Grand-Rufus, thanks for uploading this jewel.
I've been looking some time for this.

sodarus (2007-03-14)

This was the album that heralded 'the end of tradtional instruments' - all sounds could now be achieved on a synthesiser!

OrpheusDude (2011-03-06)

Can someone please tell me the difference(s) between the 1968 and 2000 versions? Was the original album completely re-recorded in 2000, or were the original elements remixed and remastered? Thanks! I remember when the album first came out and what a sensation it was for its time.

OrpheusDude (2011-03-06)

OK: I did some research. The original "Switched-On Bach" (the hyphen in the title is correct) was released on Columbia Masterworks Records in 1968.
In 1992, Wendy Carlos rerecorded the original album with two additional tracks for the Teldec label for an album called "Switched-On Bach 2000" using contemporary digital instruments, creating a radically different sound than the original album. It was not well-received.
In 2001, Sony Classical Records (successor-in-interest to Columbia/CBS Records) re-released a CD of an "enhanced" version of the 1968 album.
Got all that?
Anyway, this torrent is the 1968 Columbia Masterworks recording, and definitely NOT the 2000 Teldec version. Whether or not it's the 2001 "enhanced" version, I can't tell.

This is the 2000 version. I own 2 of the original releases and I can confirm without a doubt this is the CD version. great torrent

This is Wendy's remaster from 1999 for the Switched-On Box, reissued on single cd in 2001, both released on East Side Digital records.
The main giveaways to this version? Two, and real easy ones at that:
1. The Invention in F (track 3) was fiddled with tempo-wise at the end to have a more graceful ending (and echo added as well), not the straight and dry ending on the original album/Sony cd's. She always hated that ending, and did her best not to compromise too much of the integrity of the song, recorded in 1967 between two mono tape recorders, before she upgraded to a custom 8-track recorder that is featured on the rest of tha album.
2. The 1st movement of Brandy #3 (track 10) is NOT the original mix from 1968, rather it is the 1979 revamp included on Switched-On Brandenburgs, in which she recorded over certain parts that she simply didn't like anymore, and remixed it for the Brandys LP, with echo on the opening minute of the track to make it less dark and muddy.
These (Brandy #3, especially) make the CBS/Sony cd's a lot more desirable, despite it being from a 3rd (or worse?) generation copy and not the original masters. CBS/Sony never did their best to use the original masters on many 1st issue cds in the 80s, just use the "mastered for LP" tapes and nobody would notice.
If anybody has the CBS/Sony cd issue, do upload it.
Otherwise, keep seeding because ESD ran into distribution problems and cannot make new cd's for WC!

Thanks for this! Now I just need to find The Unusual Classical Synthesizer, from around the same era. It had the definitive electronic version of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor.
Any leads on that one?
