Formation, It's Five O'Clock Somewhere (1993?1995)
Following the end of the Use Your Illusion Tour in 1993, Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash began recording demos of material that he had written during the tour, at his home studio with bandmate Matt Sorum. Guitarist Gilby Clarke, also of Guns N' Roses and Alice in Chains bassist Mike Inez soon started to come around to jam with them. They eventually recorded twelve demo songs.[3] Slash played these songs for Axl Rose, but Rose took little interest in them. In a 1999 interview with MTV's Kurt Loder, Rose stated that "what people don't know is, the Snakepit album, that is the Guns N' Roses album. I just wouldn't do it."[4] During this time period, Slash, Clarke, and Sorum also appeared on the Guns N' Roses cover album "The Spaghetti Incident?".[3]
Slash decided to record the demos with producer Mike Clink, who had worked with Guns N' Roses; with Sorum, Clarke, and Inez playing on the record under the moniker Snakepit, which was eventually changed to Slash's Snakepit. Eric Dover, live guitarist for Jellyfish, successfully auditioned to become the group's singer. Slash and Dover wrote the lyrics for all the tracks, except "Monkey Chow" which was contributed by Clarke and "Jizz da Pit" which is an instrumental written by both Slash and Inez. Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan co-wrote the song "Beggars & Hangers-On" while Dizzy Reed (also of Guns N' Roses) contributed keyboards and Teddy Andreadis contributed harmonica. The album was released by Geffen Records, with artwork provided by Slash's brother Ash Hudson, in February 1995,[5] charting at #70 on the Billboard 200,[6] with "Beggars & Hangers-On" released as a single. For the tour in support of the album, James LoMenzo and Brian Tichy, both members of Zakk Wylde's solo band, joined the band to replace Inez and Sorum who could not tour with the group due to other commitments.[3] According to Slash's auto-biography, Slash, when Snakepit were booking shows for another leg of their tour, the label pulled financial support after the record sold one million copies:
