Description:

Frank Zappa - Radio One Star Special (1980) Two whole hours of Frank Zappa being an "artificial disc-jockey" on BBC Radio One Star Special. Frank plays some of his favourite music and chats about it in a very amenable way The story is..... I taped this from the live Radio One FM broadcast back in 1980 on to a BASF C120 cassette on me mum's old Ferguson Music Centre and it really didn't sound very good. So, just for fun, I decided to pull the whole thing apart in the digital domain and recreate it from scratch. I edited out all of the dialogue and remastered it, then proceeded to try and track down replacements for all of the music. I did have many of the tracks myself on CD or vinyl and found a bunch as lossless downloads. After about a year, I had everything I needed and created an audio montage in WaveLab to put it all back together as it was. Hopefully, you should not be able to tell that it is a Frankenstein creation and, believe me, it does sound a thousand times better than the original cassette. This is intended as a historical document for fans of FZ and this is as good as it is ever going to sound unless someone breaks into the BBC archive and nicks the tapes. AFAIK: This is the ONLY version of the Frank Zappa Star Special available. You may have seen it on Demonoid or elsewhere on the net in FLAC and/or MP3 but they are all just previous inferior incarnations of this project. Enjoy http://wiki.killuglyradio.com/index.php/Star_Special Please be aware that three of the tracks included are MP3 sourced. I have tried for ages to find lossless versions but without any luck. I was unable to use the original cassette because one track was played at the end of the first hour and I had to turn the tape over and missed most of it. Also one section of the tape was too damaged. Please don't take offence at the inclusion of these lossy tracks, it is not by choice. I hope that the importance of this project as a historical document overrides this deficiency. It goes without saying that, if at any time, lossless upgrades come to light, I will revise and re-upload the amendments. The aim of this project was to try and end up with something close to studio reference quality (even higher than the original FM broadcast). I think I got damn close. Thanks a bundle!
Reading Zappa's biography just confirms that he he was decades ahead of of his time.
Does anyone have the interview/congratulation radio hour made by a Swedish journalist, calling FZ on his birthday? I had the tape once...
