Guys. It's the servers you're playing on. I don't know why but certain servers won't let you join, some servers will crash.
My advice was this:
Find a server you like and try to stick to it, while the favorites function doesn't work (if it does I haven't tried yet), just try to rotate around the same games, the ones that you know run fine.
The whole "C++ Runtime Error" when you try to enter a game? Happens. Once again, this is usually a good sign to go play somewhere else. When I usually get a good server I can usually play half an hour (never had the time to play longer lol) uninterrupted.
It's all about the servers.
Remember, online games will always be a bit rocky. This doesn't mean the game isn't playable.
But if you really don't like it np, these things happen.

ALLRIGHT! Here's how to fix the C++ runtime error bug!
I just got back home and noticed that CSS just wouldn't run :\
So what I did was this:
1) Disconnect my computer from the web.
2) Delete the "Counter Strike Preferences Preferences" (that's the actual name, should probably change it but oh well) folder at Macintosh HD>Library>Preferences
3)Open the terminal and type in the "touch" command (without the "s) and then press space (keep terminal open)
4)Right click and show contents on the CSS app.
5) Go to Contents>MacOS
6)Drag the unix executable "cider" into the terminal app.
7) Press enter (while in Terminal, so it'll run the "touch" command on the app)
8)Run the game
9)Change my default online name to something besides "Macuser"

All right guys... the way to fix the C++ runtime error works, but it won't work if you try to attempt to apply your own settings after that. Simply put, after using that method and pressing "apply" in teh settings window the bug'll be back. I too got the could not connect to server bug, so I'm starting to believe that something fishy is indeed afoot. I'm going to keep messing around and get back to you. I don't know exactly what's causing this problem, but I do know that I never encountered anything like it when I was playing it earlier. I'm going to keep messing around and see if I can pinpoint the problem.

Then the game should run, but you won't be able to connect to the web. Why? Because you need to use a cracked server. Go to page 2 of the comments and I linked a cracked server. The reason is because 200+ people are trying to go online with technically the same copy of the game. Most of which probably with the same screen name. Simply put, I think the game is now being denied access to the servers. End of story. This is what happens with online games. With most cracks you're not even able to play online, so it's pretty tough to get a crack that has trouble playing online, then use it on another OS.
But for all of you who're crazy about online play, COD4 is coming out soon. Native. (I love CoD4.. a lot more than CSS :( )

For those of you who can get the game running, to join a cracked server enable the console from Settings>Keyboard>Advanced
Then press the ` button which is on the left side of Z.
Then type connect[space][ip address]

Hi everyone! I have a good news for you - currently we working on DODs and TF2, DODs is step ahead: connect to servers works if version is the same as client, but if server is VAC(valve anti cheat) you will see a pretty nice picture:
Not VAC-ed servers not draws popup menu for selection a team, but draws superior graphics.
About TF2 - game runs with DX9 mode ang gives slideshow even on minimum settings, just searching how to fix it.

Guys... the fix won't let you create a game either since technically your client is trying to create it in Valve's servers. the game doesn't just "suck", it's that all of you tried to play it at once. It's the ` key. Find the ` key and open console. Remember to make sure the Console is turned on first. If your game runs everything should be fine, you just need some cracked servers.
I've already tried a few.
Plz google search a cracked server list or No Steam server list for CSS.
What you're all failing to understand is this:
"This is not a normal CSS. Remember, to get any of Valve's games to run we need a CRACKED version. This is a CRACKED version of CSS running via Cider. You can't play a CRACKED version on Valve's servers. Please stop trying the join/create servers buttons, and try to manually connect to a Cracked server.
Find one that works, then stick to it."
This game does not just "suck" (yes, I'm taking offense to that), the problem is it requires a bit more effort to run. Xerxes and I worked very hard to make it a normal double click and run app (or else you'd need to use terminal or an applescript file to open it). Just please try a Cracked server, and stop complaining, I'm doing my best on this end.
I really know that you guys want this game, and I'm going to try to get it to you, but please, no more "sry but tihs game sucks" "won't work, this is terrible" "maybe you can't do a game that don't work"
at like to see a bit more detailed bug reports (i did this this this and this, then that that that and that wouldn't work) and a bit more people trying to play the game instead of complaining.
There's a reason I wrote what i did in the torrent description. It worked just fine. The same way DoD works fine on Xerxes' computer right now. Online games work great until they're mass distributed, then you need CRACKED servers.
Sorry if I let you all down, but if you guys can't find cracked servers, or let alone play on them, it's the CRACKED game's fault, and I don't crack the games, I just make 'em work with Cider.
BTW I'm connecting to cracked servers just fine.
I'll try to post a more detailed guide.

GUYS. PLEASE JUST LISTEN TO ME.
If you locate a cracked version of CSS, feel free to replace the folder with the folder in your Cider App (renaming the folders to match the info.plist of course)
The problem is this:
YOU ALL HAVE THE SAME COPY OF THE GAME.
When you all try to connect to Valve's servers, Valve will ban our copy of the game, therefore no one will be able to join. either that or someone, somewhere, with our copy, is connected and we can't connect. Point is this. You need CRACKED servers.
Please someone find a server and try it out.
Also, the bug fix I wrote should get the game running.
The game technically runs just fine, it's just that it's an online game, and this makes it hard for any cracked game. Look at all the offline games and you'll see the difference.
Also, for those of you wanting us to port more recent games, we're going to take a shot at it when Far Cry2 or HAWX comes out for the mac, or any powerful game.
We'll keep trying and inform you of anything new.
I'm going to try to find a Cracked server where lot's of people can play, but it's hard. Just perform the fix on Page3 of the comments, then find a Cracked server. That's all there is to it.
I'm sorry if some of you are angry, but please remember this is just something I'm trying to do to give to the Mac community, and cynicism does not belong here. I know you're all sad that you can't play, but you will be able to soon

Game runs fine I can play it, but now that the servers wont load says master server of the game or something wont load to give me any servers to play on.

Keep playing. Sooner or later you're going to end up getting banned (could not connect to master server list), and then you'll need the fix. :P Remember, Cracked games don't work on Steam servers.

Ok, so a few question:
I have my own CSS account, but no install discs since i bought the account online. Can i just use that to play on VAC servers?
Also, if i play on VAC servers with this download, will my IP get banned? What will happen?
Also, i downloaded setti's master list and it loaded fine, almost ALL the servers were unsecure (great!) but when i double clicked on to join, the loading bar had the "this server is vac secure" so whats the deal? was it secure or not?

The runtime error occurs commonly, just force-quit the game (command-option-escape, select cider, hit force quit, twice if necessary) and restart it and all will be well. No damage will occur to the game or your system, just to your mind over time ;)

I play CSS all the time, never get any errors, here's how:
Play in 1280x800, different resolutions can create bugs. Every time you change your multiplayer settings you'll need to delete your prefs folder. The maps that don't work are Port, Aztec and a few others, but the majority of maps do work.
Play on the supported maps, keep your screen resolution at 1280x800 and you should be fine. I play CSS ALL THE TIME. I haven't gotten a C++ runtime error in a VERY long time. Just play on supported maps, keep the resolution at the right settings, make sure you're using the custom masterservers.vdf file, if you recently changed your multiplayer settings delete your prefs folder, and play on servers that you know work (I have 3 regular servers that I always play on)

Wish I knew. When I play this on my desktop iMac I also use 1280x800, other resolutions seem to cause errors. I haven't tested them all, but 1280x800 has 0 crashes and looks decent. I recommend it, but try other resolutions to see what happens, who knows, maybe you'll find one that's bug free.

Also, for anyone who's wondering, I've found out how to fix every map in game (and in turn, every bug)
In other words, I've found a way to permanently fix the game, and am at work trying to weed out unnecessary files and lower the patch's size (it's currently 1 gb)

To play on a LAN just create a game, then find it under the "LAN" section of find servers. If you want to create an online server to play with your friends... you can't... well... if you can I don't know how yet :S I've been trying, but right know it seems you need to make a dedicated server.

All right, I'm going to upload a patch soon, but until I do, here's how YOU can do it yourself:
Download my Half Life 2 cider port, and get into its contents. Then navigate to Contents> Resources>Transgaming>C_drive>program files> root> hl2 and COPY (not move) the materials and models folder onto your desktop. Then open up your Counter Strike.app and navigate to the same folder (the "hl2" folder) and replace the materials+models with the ones you just copied to your desktop.
That's all.
Now, why did this happen in the first place? Because the models+materials in that folder are set for DX8.1 and higher (a mode of DX that our version of Cider can't emulate) so when our game tries to access them, it can't display them, causing certain maps to not load textures/models. The reason you couldn't play some maps at all (militia, inferno), was because they included water effects, and that just crashed the entire load sequence and gave the C++ error. I'll be uploading them as normal files soon (because they actually have a lot of files that you can delete.), but if you have Half Life 2 you can do this.

Sorry man :( The text bug is permanent (it's because of Cider). If you want to reduce its impact on gameplay, bring up your resolution to 1280x800, then you'll only see it in menus and chat.

Oh crap.
I tried re-dl'ing this so that I could have CS:S on the current account that i'm using which also happens to be the root account.
I deleted the original that was in a lower ability account.
I'm not able to reduce the Masterservers.vdf access so that I can only read. It forces me to have it restricted to read&write.
Is there any way to fix that or will the game still work or what?

Nevermind, the game is working without it.
The past 2 days I have suffered terrible amounts of hl2.exe failures though. Hopefully it'll stop because i've not touched the game (it was happening before my re-dl so that's not the problem somehow) in any way.

Just click the tilda to open the console. Make sure to have first done the following.
1. Go to Options in CS:S.
2. Click on Keyboard.
3. Click on Advanced Settings or whatever it is.
4. Enable the Console.
5. Do whatever shit you are talking about.
If you are talking about the Cider executable, you use Terminal (Spotlight it and it'll be the first find) to touch it.

Windowed mode doesn't work. Stick to fullscreen. Delete your preferences folder at Macintosh HD> Preferences> Counter Strike Preferences Preferences and restart the game. You can just command+tab out of the game at any time, so I don't think windowed mode will be that big of a deal

I didn't upload it because I want to make sure all issues are fixed. Other then that, not having the game fully dl'ed could be a problem.

Mrberu, first of all thanks a lot! Now i am able to play css on my iMac at last! awesome!
I have a little annoying issue (beside runtime errors, which i couldn't fix, even if i followed your instruction carefully) with my keyboard.
It's a classic alluminium keyboard QWERTY (italian settings since i am italian :) ), but some keys don't work properly in the game. for example the W key is Z in CSS...and the number keys (above the letters) don't work...so i cannot choose maps, vote, etc. ingame (with all the various admin plugins) and i am force to play with all those menus on...annoying!!!

i played this version but had to many run time errors so i tried using crossover and it worked!
it works as good as playing css on windows

That is exactly what it says. So there is this problem with the hl2.exe file that i can't figure. When i find it in the content folder and open it, it opens in text edit, and at the top it says, THIS PROGRAM CANNOT BE RUN IN DOS MODE.

I had to spend a couple of hours figuring all this out, so for people confused about the various fixes, here's what you need to do.
1. Install Mrberu's Cider port of Counter Strike Source from

ok guys, i think i figured why all the c++ errors, it has to do with 2 things, one the resolution, i noticed each time i changed my resolution, error, the other one is servers, you have to find one some servers and stick with them, but that doesn't mean the errors will stop, the only thing that works with me, delete counterstrike preferences folder in library before you run the game, and if the ++error happens, delete the pref folder, and start it up again, doing i played 30-40 minutes with no problem

Ok to everyone with teh runtime error:
Go to MacintoshHD>Library>Preferences>
Find Counter Strike Preferences Preferences ( im pretty sure thats the name)
Drag the whole folder into the trash.
Restart the game.
I put the Library>Preferences folder on my desktop because you will have this error a few times. It is a quick fix and as far as i can tell at the moment after a few times it will become less frequent.

it works great:D everytime that error thing comes out just go to your Macintosh HD>Library>Preferences then delete the Counter Strike Preferences Preferences folder. restart the game, then play! i only got one question to.. how do you bring up the console? i keep pressing "~" but nothing happens. please answer my question.

Now i know how to get the console out (for those who don't know) Got to Options, then go to Keyboard, then go to Advanced, then click "Developer's Console" (or something like that) then click "Ok". then Quit the game, go to your Macintosh HD>Library>Preferences> then delete the "Counter Strike Preferences Preferences Folder" then start the game, Create or Find a server, press "~" in-game. then type your cheats! or whatever else. Enjoy!

Then download CSS by setti and put in the wrapper.

possible solutions:
1. If you didnt do so yet, drag it into your Applications folder.
2. Macintosh HD -> Library -> Preferences -> Counterstrike Preferences Preferences. delete the Counterstrike preferences folder. If after that it still doesnt run then go back into Macintosh HD -> Library -> Preferences and in Preferences create a folder called "Counter Strike Preferences Preferences"
If it doesnt run after that then idk what to do

Ok to get this working on Lion u need:
wineskin winery and this app
To get it to work:
1)download wineskin winery
2)download this torrent
3)right clck the app after downloading it and press show package contents
4)find the css folder and copy that to ur desktop
5)open wineskin winery and create a blank wrapper (u may have to download an engine first)
6)open the wrapper u just made and copy the css folder to drive_C
7)close the wrapper then re-open it and a screen will pop up and press advance then click at browse at where it says windows exe
8)navigate to the css exe and click choose
9)clos the app then relaunch
10)enjoy

This does not work anymore, and I would recommend against downloading it. I uploaded this a while back because, back in the day, this was the only simple method one could use to play CSS on OS X. That is not the case anymore, thanks to the advent of Steam for Mac. So, guys, come on... go support Valve, their version of the game runs better than mine.
