i had no crash on my intel / leopard imac because i downloaded en installed the 9.v3 immediately. Only confusing thing was that the updater needed 2 ours (yes two ours!!!) for investigating my 120 gig bootcamp partition, to find out there is no windows filemaker, before the installer started updating filemaker 9 on my mac partition, which is the only one i installed.

1. Mount the .dmg you downloaded.
2. Copy the Installer folder on your HD, the Desktop is fine for example.
3. Open the Assisted Install.txt with any text editor and replace the Trial License Key with the other one. You can even change Name and Company. Save all.

4. Run the Installer. It and the installed app won't ask for registration and/or activation.

If you want to register the Trial Version (fmp_9.0v3R3_trial_mac.dmg),
Copy the Installer to your Hard Drive.
You need to modify the "Assisted Install.txt" text file that is with the installer package.
It should look like this, change yours too look similar and it should work:
