Sagolandet (The Land of Dreams), Jan Troell is an insight into what the film maker himself describes as "the increasing absence of life in Sweden". Jan Troell asks what kind of a world his daughter, born in 1983, will live in. He looks for answers in conversations and interviews. The 1970's and the following decade came with a promise of a future which would bring equality and a glorious future for everyone. "The Land of Dreams" lets us meet people who, in different ways, represent the gloomy mental and spiritual decline in Sweden. Troell points the camera towards naturalistic and inner values - values that he means have been despirited, disenchanted and overtaken by modern urbanized industrial society. The film is partly a troubling portrait of failure, misery and alienation, but it is also a poetic journey to the roots of aestethics and the artistic. Places where freedom and the beauty of life still have a chance. Sagolandet (The Land of Dreams), was up for 52 weeks at the theaters in Sweden - something almost unheard of in 1988. Kritiken framställs i ljuset av Sverige som mönsterland för den idealiska välfärdsstaten. Snarare än exklusivt riktad mot en nation utgör filmen i dag en civilisationskritik mot västerlandet i stort.
