As I understand it, 4:3 ratio is the only way to get the UNRATED version with extra nekkididity. If you insist on widescreen, be prepared for less skin and less fun all around.

Also, MOVIES - theater movies, not TV movies - have been widescreen since the 1950s. Doom Generation was not a TV movie. But for some reason, as indicated, the UNRATED version is only available in 4:3.
Many TV shows were produced and shown in widescreen/letterbox format even before digital HDTV began. ER was one such show, and TNT showed their original series Witchblade one night a week in full-screen and the same episode another night in widescreen/letterbox format. Just for 2 examples.
And, no widescreen on VHS? I have VHS tapes of the Indiana Jones trilogy that I got from a McDonalds promotion, among others, that say different. They weren't widely POPULAR, but they existed, for theatrical movies.
