.mkv plays nice on media player classic with ffdshow.If you have problems with playback, instal cccp .
I never have any problems using these.

To play MKV files it's better to install KLite Mega Pack Codec (which will install ffdshow, too) and then use any media application: Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, BSPlayer etc.keinem (2008-11-08)
GOM Player is an exellent player for .MKV files.I had trouble with other players because many of them take up a lot of memory but after installing GOM everything works perfectly.
I recommend you try it, its free.................
