here's how i got it to work on vista x64 and a core i7 cpu:
disable multithreading in bios and also change to run the computer with only 2 cores, if you have a 4 core cpu.
download patch 1.2 and install.

download and install patch 1.22 (it's only a DiRT.exe and it removes the copy protection).

NOW IT WORKS!

8gb of downloading later it tells me all of the files are corrupt! PLEASE HELP!
I'm able to mount the iso but all of the folders inside, when double-clicked give the following error:
"I:\PSS_US (folder name) is not accessible.
The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."
The 'SYSTEM' file doesn't do anything when it's double-click it.
I don't think this matters but I've already got a legit copy of Dirt installed on my computer. The problem is the disc is scratched and it crashes when I try to play some of the races.
That's why I downloaded this torrent but I'm unable to install it.

Not sure what happened but the game seems to launch for me now.
The only problem I have left is that I'm getting a save data is corrupt error message when I try to load my profiles from my legit version.
Is there any fix for this or do I have to start the game from scratch?

Works fine with 1.2 patch.
The game is a bad console port with poor controls. Shame on Codemasters.

Download -> install -> apply patch 1.2 + 1.21 + 1.22
This last official patch removes the starforce protection junk
and there for you can play without using a crack now!

Fix 2: The game has only been tested on systems up to quad core level, however you may be able to get the game to work by doing the following... Replace the contents of c:program with that of c:program

Game works fine on good PC. Win 7 or 8 not important. For laptops and weak setups - go play Dirt 3 ,Grid 2... :)

Oy, to leave a constructive comment for anyone having trouble with the installation:
There is a fairly good German site with a guide for installing the patches and all, including working download links (as of today):

For a quick translation:
"...In some cases the patcher fails to recognise the dirt.exe as the right version. Patch 1.2, for example, seems to do exactly that.
So the best way to install is in this order:
Patch 1.2
Patch 1.21
Patch 1.22
If you get the crc-error at patch 1.21, delete the dirt.exe, re-run 1.21 and let it install a new one.
Install 1.22 right after that and it should work."
...and it did. My install also had the same crc and other errors, but following the guide and now it runs. (bliss)
Other important note for the official 1.2 patch is: DISABLE your antivirus software (Comodo, Nod32, etc.) before install. Otherwise it quits with a nasty error code. After successful install, re-enable it.

This game runs very well on Win7 Ultimate Sp1 64-bit, Radeon 9650 (not talking about this download).
Works on XBox 360 controller.
May be this only occurs to Win7 Ultimate Sp1 64-bit, in order to get maximum FPS without any stutterings or slow downs, user need to enabled onboard LAN or any network devices to play (connected online to the internet). Need to block this game in the firewall's PRIVATE/HOME/WORK and domain, leave the PUBLIC part unblocked.
