Here begins the most poignant story. Afzal Khan had 63 wives! Whenever he won a battle the first thing he would do was to go to the defeated king's harem and pick up his choicest girls. Thus he had 63 of them. He was more worried about these 63 wives than the war against Moghuls and Shivaji. He visualised that these beautiful women whom he had kept very close to his bosom would be embraced and molested if he was defeated in the war against the Moghuls. He shuddered at this ugly idea. One of the Hindu wives of his harem suggested Khan to consult a Hindu astrologer. So Khan and his Hindu wife called an astrologer and asked him to give the prediction.
The Hindu astrologer pretended to make a large number of calculations; but would not give the result. Khan threatened to kill him if he did not speak the truth. As he was a clever astrologer, he told the Khan, “Your winning the war is bright but your wife will not live longer”. Then he asked the astrologer to examine the horoscope of another Hindu wife and the prediction of the astrologer was the same. Afzal Khan understood that he is going to be defeated and his wives would suffer molestation. In the meantime, the Sultan was exerting pressure on Khan to go against the Moghuls and Marathas.
Pushed to the well:
Khan hatched a plan. “I am definitely going to be defeated and these wives will be molested and enjoyed by my enemies. Some of the women may even willingly go with the enemy”. He could not imagine further. Others should not enjoy what I cannot. Hence, he mentally determined to kill all the 63 wives.
How to do it? Poison ... no; drown them in a river... no ... He talked to all the 63 of them , cajoled them and took them to a place about five miles away where there was a big well. In an unsuspecting manner, with the help of his followers all the 63 women were taken to the well. He pushed each one of them silently and killed all of them. Those who tried to escape were brought back and pushed into the well. Thus in this way Afzal Khan murdered all his 63 wives.
Afterwards Khan went to the war and was defeated and killed by Shivaji. Perhaps the Adil Shahi Sultan gave these 63 women a decent burial near the killer well. They are now in bad shape and people do not go near these graves called 60 graves.
Next time when you go to Bijapur make it a point to visit these 63 graves of innocent, charming women who perished at the fire of jealousy of a mad man. Thus Afzal Khan stands condemned by one and all, perhaps including the all merciful and compassionate God
