the format is standard avc/h264, you need this to encode hd resolution into such a small file without severe quality loss.
that being said, is there an 8gb version? ;) such a long show needs more bitrate!

That sounds useful but although this release suffers from commercials, it's at a higher bitrate than the 2kbps you are suggesting for that 1GB download.
There are already tons of not-great-quality caps out there - would love it if you could do that hour at 8kbps / 4GB - this is a once-in-a-lifetime event and more than worthy of the extra size & time ...

ok, then i guess thats strange how the usa one is shorter then other rips from uk
however bonker99 is right in suggesting the 1.0gb 62min would actually be low quality for a 720p encode. i'm guessing 2kbps meant 2000kbps but mean while thats still quite low for 720p x264 (1.45gb would be if you want to at least get about the same bitrate as this)

The NBC/USA caps are shorter because they 'hurried' through the teams parade - I can't be sure if they actually cut some teams or just 'condensed' it - I suspect the latter but hence it's an hour shorter than the real live thing.
Also, the return from the ad breaks look pretty jarring so I think they may have cut some 'real time' there too which implies that the NBC cap is not live??!!

Also: Yes, this is about 3300kbps and it shows in some places as there's an awful lot of high contrast stuff in the show as you can imagine.
This really does deserve a high bitrate treatment - filling a DVD with the hour or so for the whole thing (minus the athletes parade) would be a keeper for sure ...

For clarity - the ad breaks have been removed in this cap, you can still tell when there was an ad ("we'll be right back" etc!) but you return instantly to the action but obviously a few minutes of 'real time' has passed inbetween as I referred to earlier :)

I've seen a delayed videocast from CBC that had all the commercials in it. When I later saw a torrent from Chinese TV without commericals, I realised the CBC videocast was a copy of CBC's livecast where the commericals were shown in place of actual footage, so actual footage was missing.
The actual events taking place, don't "time-out" so western TV can show its ads.
By the way, has anyone taken notice that US, Canadian, UK networks are blocking users based on their country-of-origin IP?

On the contrary, I think this is an excellent cap. The video/audio quality is simply AMAZING. And best of all...no commercials! I completed the download in just a few hours.
The bottom line? This is the best Beijing Olympics 2008 torrent out there!
By the way, CNET claims NBC HD's broadcast contains only stereo audio. Not sure why this cap contains surround audio...
Can't wait for the 1080i/p version. But I doubt those videos would match the quality of this. Outstanding quality.

Thank you: fed_cri - This is my 4th d/l of the ceremonies, and by far, the best video quality.
One important piece of footage missing is the B/W video clip that briefly showed the ancient technique of paper-making by hand; it concludes with the scroll of paper rolled up on both sides in the centre of the screen; then suddenly the video opens with the same scroll of paper in the middle of the Bird's Nest in Beijing ....very impressive!

.mkv files are the new standard (since 2007) for 720p video. Almost all scenes release .mkv files exclusively. Just download a few codec packs (Combined Community Codec Pack) and VLC Media Player.

Tibet is an internal matter which needs to be handled by China - and though the U.S. is quick to condemn, how did their Government react when someone within their society wanted to live seperately from the U.S.? The FBI went in with guns and tanks. I'm talking 'bout Waco.

This shit is hosed. the audio goes wack after about 5 minutes. I noticed that rar pieces 30-51 are incomplete even though utorrent says its done. divx player has a hard time playing it. as does windows media player. nobody rar's a movie into pieces. just post the whole thing in one shot.
