Your system specs are important when playing a high resolution film. Dual-core processors work best with vid cards that have fast GPUs and several pipelines. If your system is fast though, your problem might be the player itself.
VLC is good but has trouble with high-res rips; try Media Player Classic with latest codecs. Should run fine. If it still fails it may point to your hardware.

If you are using uTorrent.
Under Preferences>Bandwidth
Global maximum number of connections:500
Maximum number of connected peers per torrent: 500
And it helped increase the speed.
I went from 1-2mbit to 3-5 mbit.
I have a 6mbit connection.
only 750kbps up tho :(.
I wish I had found that out 6 hours ago when I started downloading this torrent...........
