This is the first attempt at a complete recording of “Die Dreigroschenoper,” made as part of a project initiated by Lenya (Weill’s widow) to record all of Weill’s music after his untimely death at age 50 in 1950. The project – which began at Columbia Records and then was moved to MGM Records – was never completed. Decca also initiated a similar project in the 1990s to be completed in time for Weill’s centennial in 2000, but arguments over rights and restrictions forced the project to be abandoned after just a few recordings. To this day, a good deal of Weill’s music remains unrecorded, especially his Broadway shows (many of which were issued in highly truncated versions).
While this recording is, in its own way, indispensible, it is far from accurate. First, all of Lenya’s music had to be transposed down since she couldn’t sing it in the keys in which Weill composed it. Also, the orchestrations are not the originals. The voices are also technically not the greatest.
Of the current crop of recordings of “Die Dreigroschenoper,” the one which is the most accurate as far as the orchestrations and vocal performances is the one Decca made in 1990 with John Mauceri conducting a superstar cast including Ute Lemper (in the Lenya role), Italian pop start Milva, and opera legends René Kollo (as Mack the Knife – Mackie Messer) and perhaps most impressively Wagnerian diva Helga Dernesch. It also settles an old argument over which character – Jenny or Polly – sings the famous “Pirate Jenny” by letting Polly sing it in Act One as originally intended, and also, as an “insert,” by Jenny in Act Two, where it is now customarily performed, especially if there is a terrific Jenny (who hasn’t much else to do except the “Tango-Ballad” duet).
