One of the blues world's hardest-touring artists – estimates are that he's played some 15,000 gigs in his lifetime – King had a number of people believing he was ready to hang it all up. Groundbreaking was beginning on the B.B. King Museum in his old hometown of Indianola, Mississippi and no one could have blamed the 80-year-old performer for dimming the lights on his legendary career. The thing is, he didn't stop. King did cut back on the number of dates he played, down from the 250-plus appearances he used to put in during a typical year. But today the guitarist continues to tour; he's in the middle of a U.S. trek as we speak. King no longer stands when he plays – the King of the Blues now performs seated on his throne – but he still gives his audience what it wants: the stinging, vibrato-drenched guitar he helped pioneer, that deep-throated, supremely soulful singing voice, and a tremendously professional band of musicians who never fail to keep his shows grounded, even on those rare nights when King himself is off his game.
