you have no idea how much trouble you will get by using Office 2008. A nest of bugs. Even SP1, released earlier this week, causes more problems than it solves.
Walk away.

Office 2008 is awesome. The SP1 patch is not however; do not install it (yet)!

Some users who have installed Office 2008 for Mac Service Pack 1 are reporting an issue that occurs after installation. The issue causes the Office Setup Assistant to open when they try to open an Office application. This situation occurs when the Office Setup Assistant detects that an invalid Product Key was used to install Office 2008.
To resolve this issue, please move the following files to the Trash:
·
/Users/username/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office
2008/Microsoft Office 2008 settings.plist
· /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist
After you complete these steps, open any Office application, and then use the product key that is included with your original installation disk to complete the installation. The product key is located on the back of the Office 2008 for Mac DVD sleeve or on the back of the Install Guide. For additional assistance, visit the Help and How-To section of the Microsoft Web site.
If this helps you, please contact me through the private posts, I would like to get some files from you to help track down this issue.
I am sorry you if experienced this issue, and I hope with your help we can determine why some folks are getting into this issue.

i have not had any problems with it

DJ_NRG (2008-05-19)

Had exactly the trouble kevinm1 posted. Unfortunately I hadn't see the message before I deleted the setup assistant and now it requires the setup assistant to launch.
Sounds similar to what is happening with Adobe products now when the auto updater runs and cracked Adobe software become unusable.

kevinm1 (2008-05-20)

LOL, I'm no affiliated with MS. That is a repost of the solution from the guy on Macrumors.com. I had the same problem. Interesting that he offered the fix is an invalid key was the culprit.

cinnamontea (2008-05-21)

is there a solution for this problem after updating to SP1? I followed instructions posted by kevinm1 and it doesn't work. After entering the product key, I click continue but it doesn't go any further...
I'm stuck.

GangaZumba (2008-05-22)

Many thanks. It worked out fine.

GangaZumba (2008-05-22)

But I didn't install the SP1 yet.

GangaZumba (2008-05-22)

Well, I did not install the SP1

This serial works: J3JT3-8J2PM-VMYD8-8WT9X-BCM7M

cinnamontea (2008-05-22)

thank you so much mackenneth, you are a life saver !! the serial worked

bh_mayor (2008-05-26)

OK, a few questons:
1. How does one determine if they have standard, or a volume license version or what?
2. If replacing the key, is a reboot required between?
3. Has anyone seen where trying to install the update got them a disk with a "red line" that prevented its installation even using the "j3 key"?
4. Anyone has created steps for fixing this, what order, exactly what to do?

GangaZumba (2008-05-27)

Using kevinm1 method plus the serial number provided by mackenneth I've managed to install the SP1 successfully. Many thanks.

mokupuni (2008-08-28)

Thank you mackenneth for the license number. I had installed the update and the previous number would not work. It's been almost 3 months.
Love the sharing!
