Hiroshi Shimizu Boxset 1 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0027307/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0426900/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427424/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0160535/ http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk75/otr2damascus/12.jpg One of the undisputed masters of Japan cinema, Shimizu Hiroshi (1903-1966) made well over 100 films in his career, ranging from children's films to lighthearted comedies to stories from the fringe. His outstanding cinematic achievements match that of contemporary great and lifelong friend Ozu Yasujiro, though the latter has eclipsed him in recognition. Shimizu Hiroshi is particularly well known for his children's films, such as Children in the Wind (1937), but his steady stream of output for Shochiku from the 1920s to 1950s yielded a far wider selection of films, many of which have been sadly lost to time. In comparison to Ozu's films which are readily available, Shimizu's works have been near impossible to find outside of the festival circuit, but Shochiku is now finally releasing Shimizu's films on DVD with English subtitles. Entitled Yamaii no Fukei ("Mountain Scenery"), the first four-disc boxset in the Shimizu Hiroshi Collection comes with four films: Arigato-san (1936); Anma to Onna (1938); Kanzashi (1941); and Minato no Nihon Musume (1933), a silent film that is only being released as a bonus feature with this boxset. Arigatau-san (Mr. Thank You) (1936, B&W, 78min) Based on a short story by Nobel Prize-winning author Kawabata Yasunari, this lighthearted road film follows the rolling wheels of a country bus manned by a driver who says "thank you" to everyone he encounters. "Mr. Thank You" drives into various humorous and telling episodes with different passenger and travelers as he rumbles his way through the mountainous countryside. Arigatau-san highlights common Shimizu motifs of location shooting, constant movement, and heartwarming sentiments, while at the same time subtly addressing real-world worries like Depression-era woes and the condition of Korean laborers. Anma to Onna (The Masseurs and a Woman) (1938, B&W, 66min) Anma to Onna revolves around a pair of traveling blind masseurs who stop at an inn. One of the masseurs, Tokuichi (Saburi Shin), takes an interest in a woman (Takamine Meiko) from Tokyo who seems be hiding a mysterious past. The film peeks in and out of the lives and stories of the characters in unexpected ways that defy narrative conventions. Kanzashi (Ornamental Hairpin) (1941, B&W, 70min) Based on an Ibuse Masuji short story, this delightful escapist drama is set at a hot spring resort providing sanctuary to people of vastly different backgrounds and personalities bounded by one thing: their common desire to not leave. The resort's patrons include a Tokyo woman (Tanaka Kinuyo) with a mysterious past who develops a brief relationship with a wounded soldier (Ryu Chishu). A comedic piece filmed and set during wartime Japan, Kanzashi makes a statement with its lightness. Minato no Nihon Musume (Japanese Girls at the Harbor) (1933, B&W, 72min) One of Shimizu Hiroshi's most representative silent films, Minato no Nihon Musume portrays the evolving relationships of two young women as fate takes them down different roads. Sunako and Dora, two schoolgirls attending a Christian school in the East-meets-West port city of Yokohama, pledge their eternal friendship to each other, but their lives begin a long spiral downward and apart after they meet westernized gangster Henry. ~~~~~~ Anma to onna.avi ~~~~~~ File Size (in bytes):...........................747,073,536 --- Video Information --- Video Codec Name:...............................XviD ISO MPEG-4 Duration (hh:mm:ss):............................1:06:08 Frame Count:....................................95136 Frame Width (pixels):...........................640 Frame Height (pixels):..........................464 Aspect Ratio:...................................1.379 Frames Per Second:..............................23.976 Video Bitrate (kbps):...........................1377 ......MPEG-4......B-VOP........................ Oh, I didn't think people liked good movies... I'm very glad to see these.
Thanks

duhprane (2008-07-26)

Awesome, but those aren't English subtitles.....

 lord_terabyte (2008-08-20)

Yes, they are English. I verify everything before upload.

Deputycat (2008-08-25)

Perhaps I'm too stupid, but the subtitles are Chinese or whatever, not in the letters, I use here and I don''t know how I should transfer them to English.

 lord_terabyte (2008-09-24)

What are you guys trying to view the films with? Subs were verified, should work with any up to date standalone and certainly VLC.

pstrkim (2008-11-02)

Thank's a lot

grcomm (2008-11-23)

I dont want to seem like an ingrate. I really appreciate the opportunity to see these films -- I saw Arigato-San and Kanzashi during the Shochiku retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art and Film Society of Lincoln Center a couple of years ago and fell in love with Shimizu's delicacy of feeling and sureness of tone.
But I ran all four of the films in this torrent in three different media players -- Windows Media Player, VLC and Media Player Classic -- and each time the subtitles were in (I believe) Chinese. They definitely weren't in English. I have absolutely no reason to doubt lord terabyte's word when he says that he verifies everything before he uploads, but that is what happened when I played these four films.
Needless to say, given the impossibility of seeing these under any other circumstances, I'm grateful, but English titles would be a big help. I can't imagine how this problem came about, and I'm quite disturbed by the tone of some of the comments, particularly on the second box-set; uploading is a time-consuming task and some respect should be paid to someone generous enough to take the time and effort to make these fairly rare films available.

HedgeKn (2008-12-01)

I didn't download this torrent but I downloaded loads of others from lord_terabyte so maybe I can give you some advice.
As much as I can see this movie has subtitles in IDX, SUB format so it's possible that they have more than one track, in VLC player you can choose this track (Video>Subtitles Track). Hope this helps...
Cheers!
P.S. 2 lord_terabyte thanks for all you're uploads mate!

grcomm (2008-12-05)

HedgeKn -- You are a genius! If there's a Nobel Prize for just plain helping out, you should get it. Of course, you were right about the VLC player, and Lord T was telling the absolute truth.
Thank you, thank you, thank you -- that's one thank you for each of you and a final one for my exuberant gratitude!!!

A thousand thanks for this! Those who have problems with the Japanese/English sub/idx subtitles included in the torrent or who prefer texted over bitmapped subtitles can find English SRT subitles for both of the Hiroshi Shimizu Boxsets here:
