Yet, one day in an effort to escape the restrictions of her royal life, she rides away, disguised as a man, and is snowbound at an inn. There she meets and falls in love with Spanish envoy Antonio (John Gilbert). After a few idyllic nights together, Christina and Antonio are compelled to part, but the Queen vows that they will meet again û which they do, when they Spaniard presents his embassy to the Queen. As Queen, Christina favours peace for Sweden. At one point in the film she argues an end to the Thirty Years' War, saying: Spoils, glory, flags and trumpets! What is behind these high-sounding words? Death and destruction, triumphals of crippled men, Sweden victorious in a ravaged Europe, an island in a dead sea. I tell you, I want no more of it. I want for my people security and happiness. I want to cultivate the arts of peace, the arts of life. I want peace and peace I will have! When Count Magnus (Ian Keith), who wants the Queen's affections for his own, riles up the Swedish people against the Spaniard, Christina abdicates the throne. She leaves Sweden to be with Don Antonio, but he is wounded by Magnus in a duel, and dies in her arms. In arguably the most famous shot of the film, Christina stands as a silent figurehead at the bow of a ship. With the wind blowing through her hair, the camera moves in to a tight close-up on her face. Cast: * Greta Garbo as Queen Christina * John Gilbert as Antonio * Ian Keith as Magnus * Lewis Stone as Oxenstierna * Elizabeth Young as Countess Ebba Sparre * C. Aubrey Smith as Aage * Reginald Owen as Charles * Georges Renavent as Chanut * David Torrence as Archbishop * Gustav von Seyffertitz as General * Ferdinand Munier as Innkeeper * Akim Tamiroff as Pedro (uncredited) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRIVIA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Greta Garbo initially requested that Laurence Olivier play the lead, Don Antonio, since she was impressed by his performance in Westward Passage (1932). In July 1933, the press announced that Olivier would take the part. However, when they did the rehearsals in August, Garbo and Olivier had no chemistry, and he was released, although MGM Studios honored his negotiated salary of $1,500 a week for four weeks minimum. Garbo requested that John Gilbert be cast in the role instead. * For the famous closing shot of Greta Garbo at the prow of the ship, director Rouben Mamoulian had wanted the camera to begin with a long shot, and then, in one unbroken take, gradually dolly in on a two-thirds close-up of Garbo's face, holding on her at the end of the shot. Unfortunately, with the camera's 48mm lens that close to the human face, pores tend to resemble craters on the surface of the moon. Borrowing on aspects of the magic lantern, Mamoulian devised a large, ruler-shaped, glass filter strip that was clear at one end, becoming increasingly more diffused along its length. With this glass filter mounted in front of the lens, as the camera moved in on Garbo, the glass strip was gradually drawn through the filter holder, beginning with the clear end, and ending with the diffused end (close-up), softening Garbo's facial features with more flattering results * The scene where Christina goes around the room at the inn, remember the night she spent with her lover, was choreographed so meticulously that Greta Garbo performed the scene to a metronome. * Since John Gilbert was falling out of favor with the majors as a leading man, Greta Garbo was doing him a big favor by requesting him as the male lead. Unfortunately, the film did not help to re-establish Gilbert, and soon after he dropped out of pictures altogether. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Personal Info ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My releases so far... personal rips from original DVDs, looking for quality... Thank you for this classic. Has bad synch after conversion with ConvertXtoDVD, also aspect problems (widescreen squeezed to together sideways). Any suggestions for a website with necessary codecs and converters?
