What are these padding files?

Padding files are a "feature" introduced by the BitComet client to prevent two or more files from sharing the same piece. They are empty files whose size is the difference between the torrent's piece size and all or the remainder of a given file.

If you are no longer seeding the torrent, you can delete the padding files.

Thanks for the answer though I'm sure my best understanding is they are necessary for seeding. That's good to know as I will have 'Unlimited' (Oz BB is/has been very restrictive) when present contract ends and will be able to leave seeding on.
