This is actually taken from a radio broadcast of a performance on 20 December 1949 at the Teatro San Carlo, Naples, and is the earliest known recording of a complete opera with Callas (only a few fragments from performances of "Norma" and "Turandot" recorded earlier in 1949 exist; Callas made her first studio recordings in November 1949 but they were not released until 1950).
The sound on this "Nabucco" is a bit grizzly, and if you are not used to listening to these historic broadcasts, it may take you a while to get used to them, but Callas is simply ablaze in this performance. The role she sings, Abagaile, is generally considered a "voice-wrecker" and the most difficult role that Verdi wrote in all of his 27 operas, but Callas not only tosses it off as written, she adds optional high notes! It's wild!
