Questo talk descrive brevemente il coreboot del BIOS replacemente (precedentemente chiamato LinuxBIOS) ed in seguito si focalizza su cio' che e' richiesto per portare un PC dall'accensione fisica (col pulsante) fino all'avvio del sistema operativo, e come coreboot affronta il problema. Un PC moderno e' abbastanza differente dall'originale del 1981 e, nonostante il BIOS sia rimasto deve (il BIOS) ora occuparsi di diverse sfide molto complesse. Quando il PC originale, con la sua bus pre-ISA, veniva acceso, molte se non tutte le parti del sistema erano immediatamente in grado di eseguire applicazioni. Il PC di oggi puo' avere diverse CPU multicore che sono interconnesse da HyperTransport, Front Side Bus o QuickPath, RAM DDR3 su ogni nucleo CPU e PCI Express - rendendo la situazone molto differente dato che tutti questi componenti richiedono una inizializzazione complessa per essere implementati nel software. Nel 2009 coreboot celebra il suo decimo anno e sono state imparate molte lezioni sull'hardware del PC contemporaneo. Dopo una breve descrizione di coreboot, viene smontata logicamente una tipica scheda madre di PC, prestando attenzione ai componenti hardware piu' significativi e come essi interagiscono, e spiegando come e' stato implementato in coreboot il supporto per questa scheda madre. This talk briefly describes the BIOS replacement coreboot (formerly LinuxBIOS) and then focuses on what is required to bring up a PC from power on to where an operating system can run, and how coreboot approaches the problem. A modern PC is quite different from the 1981 original, and while the BIOS still remains it must now take on several fairly complex challenges. When the original PC with it's pre-ISA expansion bus was powered on, most if not all parts of the system were immediately capable of running applications. The PC of today can have several multicore CPUs which are interconnected by HyperTransport, Front Side Bus or QuickPath, DDR3 RAM on each CPU core, and PCI Express - making the situation very different since all these components require complex initialization to be implemented in software. coreboot celebrates it's 10th year in 2009 and many lessons have been learned about contemporary PC hardware.
