Gonsalves made his name at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival with an arresting, 27-chorus solo in the middle of Duke Ellington's performance of "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue" Tell It the Way It Is! was recorded in 1963 by Paul Gonsalves and other two former Duke Ellington band members , Johnny Hodges and Ray Nance, which teamed up with Swedish trumpeter Rolf Ericson and pianist Walter Bishop Jr. on two sessions to create Tell It the Way It Is!.
