"Resistance" is a song by English alternative rock band Muse, featured on their 2009 fifth studio album The Resistance. Written by vocalist, guitarist and pianist Matthew Bellamy, it was released as the third single from the album, following "Uprising" and "Undisclosed Desires", on 22 February 2010. The intro of the song is used in the trailer of the last episode of BBC show Silent Witness. In February 2010, Muse had uploaded a picture puzzle of "Resistance" artwork on their official Facebook page. The puzzle itself has a making of the "Resistance" track (which will be able to see it after solving the puzzle). This song was featured in a promo for an episode of Human Target.
The music video for "Resistance", which features footage of the band performing live on The Resistance Tour, debuted on 14 January 2010, and was directed by Wayne Isham in Madrid (Palacio de los Deportes, 28-November-2009).
On 21 February 2010, "Resistance" entered the UK Rock Chart at #2. Following from its success on the Rock Chart, on 28 February 2010, the single entered the UK Singles Chart as a new entry at #38, beating previous single: "Undisclosed Desires", which only peaked at #49. "Resistance" is now the second Top 40 hit from The Resistance. The same week resulted in "Resistance" climbing to the #1 spot on the UK Rock Chart as well. On the week of March 20th, it jumped from #6 to #1 on the Billboard Alternative Rock Chart and it became their second number one single on the Chart along with their previous single "Uprising".
The Resistance is the fifth studio album by English alternative rock band Muse, released in Europe on 14 September 2009, and in North America on 15 September 2009. As their latest album, the main theme of the songs is about political corruption, alien invasion, New World Order conspiracies and more conventional love songs.
On its release, it topped the album charts in 19 countries. It also debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 128,000 copies. It also beat its predecessor, Black Holes and Revelations, in relative album sales in its debut week in the UK selling approximately 148,000 copies and Worldwide with 479,000 copies sold. Critics were mostly positive about the album, with much of the praise directed towards its ambition and classical music influences. The album was produced by the band and mixed by Mark Stent. The album's first single, "Uprising", was released on 7 September 2009, with the album's second single, "Undisclosed Desires" released on 16 November 2009. "Resistance" was released as the third single from the album on 22 February 2010, and although it failed to match the success of its predecessors, the single reached number one in the UK Rock Chart and became the second Top 40 hit from the album in the UK Singles Chart. Exogenesis: Symphony was released as a limited edition EP in the United States on 19 April 2010. Muse promoted the album by performing the songs in a number of live appearances, including their promotional tour The Resistance Tour. Worldwide, the album has sold over 2.8 million copies.
