This is plain stupid. It's ok to flick institutions for ignoring their responsibilities about data security, but not at the expense of thousands of innocent people and their privacy.
People who download these kind of torrents are probably the same kind people who like to spread gossips, watch soap-operas and read weekly magazines for women.
In Finland we have this thing called "Juoruämmät".

this isn't even about the hack, or about Harvard. i mean, this is seriously a malicious attack that could RUIN alot of people's lives. According to the articles i've read, grad students have their SSNs in there. If that's true, and if this is real...then this is horrible. There's already a massive, worldwide problem with identity theft, alot of people who worked very hard could have their lives completely screwed up cuz somebody felt like they had to prove something to harvard. Not cool. they could've published this if they had something to prove, without the contacts or SSNs. That would have proved just as much without risking peoples' identities. Bad form...

basman776 (2008-03-20)

My superficial search for any SSN in this material leads me to the conclusion, that there are none.
The SQL dumps contain no database attribute for a SSN. And searching for the regexp \D(\d{3,3}\W?\d{2,2}\W?\d{4,4})\D gives a lot of false positives (phone numbers, zip codes).
Seems to me that the hard working americans got away this time.
