Description:

1776 – Film Notes (please read, these are actually very important!) Because I have a sort of special relationship with this film, there a few important details I want to hit before listing the formal data below. I hope you will take the time to read them. • I teach American History, and use this film in my course, as do countless other teachers. I expect MANY of you have seen it in that capacity. However, what most people don’t know is that until very recently, the only version available was a horribly mutilated edition that was the result of censorship and crappy editing beyond the control of the director. In fact, it was largely that horrible version that was shown in theaters back in 1972 when this came out (more detail on that below). Due to this fact, many of you have probably dismissed this film as a lousy and cheesy mess that isn’t worth bothering with. The version torrented HERE is the corrected version as envisioned by the director and author when it was created, and it is definitely worth a second look. • Jack Warner (head of the studio back then) was a very right wing jingoistic patriot who was close friends with Richard Nixon, and Nixon was obsessed with his “enemies list”, particularly those he perceived in Hollywood. He therefore exerted a great deal of pressure to limit or prevent art / books / movies that he somehow saw as (shall we say) not helpful to his political ideas. 1776 contained historical speeches and a song called ‘cool conservative men’ that wasn’t particularly flattering to Nixon’s views. Furthermore, the depression and reluctance among many Americans during this period of the Revolution has many parallels to anti-war unhappiness during the 1970s phase of the war in Vietnam. Nixon thus asked Warner to censor the hell out of this film, which Warner did. The result was a mess. The new corrected version has put it all back together. • As I mentioned above, this film is (mostly) very historically accurate. It is faithfully based on the Tony-Winning stage musical, which in turn was based on straight play written by a historical scholar and teacher. Almost all of the critical dialog and speeches are taken line-for-line from actual Continental Congressional debate, writings, or letters form the Founders. Abigail really DID gripe about the lack of pins. John really DID foresee fireworks and parades. The personalities depicted are fairly accurate, though distorted somewhat for comedic and musical performance. Most importantly, the failure of the founders to eliminate slavery because to do so would have cost the Southern states is shown in about the way that debate really took place. This film is a good way (especially for beginners) to get an elementary feel for just how the heck we got the USA started in the first place. • The director’s commentary is actually pretty important to understanding a lot about our history, the play, this film, and this VERSION of the film. Therefore, since ripping to AVI doesn’t allow for that commentary, I will be upping this torrent twice. Once in this smaller and more convenient version, and then again as the full NTSC DVD version, which would be a nice download and burn for someone to give a history buff or history teacher. I expect the AVI version will stay fairly well seeded, but full DVD torrents are notoriously hard to keep going. If you opt for the big one, please seed to at least 1:1, cuz I just don’t have the bandwidth to keep that one going once it’s up. • One last note, purely as a film fan and someone who did a lot of theater in their younger days – the songs for women in this musical (in my personal opinion) frankly suck. I mean REALLY suck. They are a collection of atonal crap that were badly written and they play like caterwauling, especially the songs HE PLAYS THE VIOLIN (insipid garbage) and TILL THEN, which sounds like a cat howling. Skip these. The rest of the show is great, I promise! Hunt. The screenplay by Peter Stone was adapted from his libretto for the 1969 stage musical of the same name. Portions of the dialogue and some of the song lyrics were taken directly from the letters and memoirs of the actual participants of the Second Continental Congress. The song score was composed by Sherman Edwards. The film focuses on the representatives of the thirteen original colonies who participated in the Second Continental Congress. After a year of loud and often acrimonious debate about the course of human events, they finally put their signatures to one of the most important documents in modern history, the Declaration of Independence. Thanks, I remember seeing this shortly after it came out - not sure, but from your info, probably the messed up version. Have never really liked musicals, but this still left an impression on me.

Well, to be honest, ANY fan of historical drama will be well served here if they just fast forward through the music. A couple of the lighter songs are fun, and the nasty tone of the operatic 'Molasses to Rum to Slaves" describing the triangle trade gets many points across emotionally that regular dialog might not. The rest of the music is fairly banal. Fans of the miniseries John Adams will get a kick out of some of this.

Great Notes! Getting good speed. Thanks for the work on this one!

thank for putting the full dvd up ... aside from the fact that you get all the extras (which to me only makes a film more interesting when hearing the background and development and thought processes that go into the creation of a work) but it is a better quality copy than the avi (not criticizing dear sir ... simply stating it and your explanation of why you did two separate torrents is of course quite sensible and logical) ...
also nice to see another history buff/teacher on here who recognized the importance of this piece of musical theatre in a true historic context ... yep it's pretty spot on for the characters and information (but as you noted a bit inflated for purposes of the theatre because well, that's the theatre) ;) ... but some great songs really, and someone said if you leave whistling a couple tunes from the musical the writer has done his job ... well 'sit down john', "Piddle, Twiddle, and Resolve" (with it's military drumming), and "The Egg" all do that quite well ... "Mama, Look Sharp" while not a tune people would whistle certainly is a haunting song and well-delivered by the actor in this version ... it brings to my mind the nights of the multiple-day battles in the Civil War (directly connected to the series of events portrayed here of course), Gettysburg jump to the front of my mind, where the dying were left out in the field of battle with the dead and their plaintive cries and dying words drifted thru the night as the survivors tried to sleep and dress wounds and prepare for the next day's battle ... the haunting nature of that is enough to birth a lifetime of ghost stories (and even with simply the US Civil War there are plenty of ghost stories to go around).
Very nice write-up as well and once again we have Nixon rearing his ugly head ... he should be held-up as an example of micro-management gone mad for most any boss i ever had and for most bosses out there from what i hear ... every little thing had to be his way, his thoughts, his beliefs and in this case, his version of history lol ... what a monster ... well ... a somewhat minor league monster considering the administration of Bush the Dumber ... when Hunter S Thompson declares if given the two choices of Nixon and Bush that he'd pull the lever for Nixon, you can see what a real monster Bush was ... and still is and will be considering that his 'policies' will be dominating US foreign policy for the next 50 years ...
ah but as always i ramble on...
so they used to show this musical on the 4th of July every year ... i don't see it any longer ... i'd make whoever was around sit down and watch it especially the kids since they are taught next to nothing about most things historical ... and what they are taught is a very sanitized and made-for-tv-movie version of history ... at least this is accurate ... and for a musical to be accurate is quite a marvelous and amazing thing ... (remember that the real Maria from "The Song of Music" was an ogre and a slave-driver and whipped those kids along to make her famous and to make money ... quite an ugly story and far far removed from the Julie Andrews "nanny every child would be lucky to have")
thanks again and i'm looking thru your other torrents as i do when i find someone has upped a very quality item such as this ... the Beethoven is outstanding :)
thanks again and of course i'll hang on to seed :)

oh an one more thing ... if anyone is wondering how accurate the set is for this, in particular of course, the room they do most of the singing and arguing in, it is dead on ... an amazing piece of replication ... and having been in that room in july 200 years later, i can attest to the fact that even then they did not have air conditioning and it was 'hot as hell' as is stated over and over in the musical ... but they even got the color of the table cloths right ... quite a place and quite a thing to stand there frankly ... but perhaps that is more for the egghead historians than it is for the general public ;)
