Planet Hemp - Os Cães Ladram Mas A Caravana Não Pára

Os Cães Ladram Mas A Caravana Não Pára (The Dogs Bark But The Caravan Doesn’t Stop) is the second LP by Planet Hemp. Released on Sony/Chaos in 1997, it is an eclectic mixture of rap, rock (even speed metal), with plenty of samples and interpolations of jazz, Brasilian funk and Brasilian popular music. Track 9 is a credible rap cover of Led Zeppelin’s “The Ocean”. There have always been rumors of Planet Hemp being arrested or jailed, but I can only confirm that shows of theirs were cancelled based on police threats. This is due to the fact that the group bragged about their use of marijuana, which is a crime (called “apology for crime”) in Brasil. On the second track, “Queimando Tudo” (a vídeo of which can be seen on youtube at), for example, Marcelo D2 raps (idioms loosely translated): I sing like this because I smoke marijuana Guess who’s back exploiting your shame I’m the best on the microphone I’m not a sucker for nobody Because Planet Hemp still likes the Mary Jane So please, don’t treat me like I’m marginal If the conversation starts here, it’s already a bad beginning You want to arrest me just because I smoke Cannabis Sativa An active head, is that what inconveniences you? I speak, I think, I scream and to you this is fucked A sharp mind, my brother, I know, is what really astounds you But I continue to burn it all down to the roach For its outlaw stance Planet Hemp achieved almost legendary status, particularly after the band became the subject of a song, “Erva Proibida” (Forbidden Herb) by a true legend of popular Brasilian music, the late Bezerra da Silva. The song tells of the band’s plight and the benefits of marijuana (It starts out, “God created nature and also the beauties of this life / And Planet Hemp wants to know why this herb is prohibited.” Bezerra sang various songs about smoking dope.)
