Den arbetslose Antonio far till slut ett arbete som kraver att man har en cykel. For att fa pengar till mat har han pantsatt cykeln, som han lyckas losa ut med hjalp av familjens sanglinne. Bara några timmar senare blir cykeln stulen. Eftersom det är meningslost att kontakta polisen och han kanner igen tjuven startar han tillsammans med sin son en otrolig jakt genom Roms gator.
