For clarity, this is the Original Broadway Cast version which was released on vinyl before the movie was made, with Ian Gillan of Deep Purple singing the part of Jesus; IMHO the best version, but I guess the first one you heard is always the best. :-)Mediainfo:

Actually, this would be the London version if it starred Ian Gillan (+ Murray Head, Yvonne Elliman). The original Broadway cast starred Jeff Feinholt and later Teddy Neely (+ Ben Vereen, Yvonne Elliman). And Bhobson333, I fully agree that the London version outstrips the film soundtrack by far — though I do think Carl Anderson was a pretty awesome Judas.

Anyone know if there was one round about 1968? Someone is looking for one that he thinks Rod Stewart and/or Elton John were on. He had had an old vinyl LP in the late 60's, but it was played to death!Tolsta Girl (2012-04-28)
Is there an even earlier version - about 1967/8? Someone has asked me to try and find one from then. He had had an LP with people like Rod Stewart and/or Elton John on it, but it got played to death. He seemed to think it was released even before they got funding to do the film or musical.molly_dog (2012-11-19)
@bhobson333, I know it's been a couple years but thanks for the clarification. The broadway soundtrack IS the best because, as you said, it is the true original. This is the version my older brother owned back in 1971 in rural Mississippi--you cannot even begin to imagine how unpopular listening to this album made us!! Dear jonathanmcdougall,Please specify the album or similar this is made from. Donʼt just throw here some mp3 files, give some basic info about them.

Just to clarify, the 1970 version here with Ian Gillian singing Jesus was NOT a stage production. Webber and Rice could not rasie the funds to do a stage production, so they instead did a double album featuring the best of English rock musicians and singers at that time. Yvonne Elliman was the soul newcomer. Gillian was too busy with Deep Purple to do a stage production, but story ghoes director Norman Jewison wanted him for the movie; but again Deep Purple commitments prevented him from participating and instead we got whiny voiced (sorry but in comparison he was whiny) Ted Neely.sirneon1 (2014-01-20)
Heck yeah! I had this on vinyl in my pre-fire collection. Looking for the Fenholt recording though...Files:
