this is why you might consider running all keygens within a protected VMWare session using persistent disk option. It won't matter what little nasties you might find.

correction, use non-persistent disk. Any nasties go away when you shut down your running VM.

It wouldn't install, complaining that there was an active instance of vmware running. There wasn't.
So I deleted the previous May 2006 install of vmware, but the 6.5 install still claimed a vmware was running. I hand deleted a couple remaining vmware keys with Start->Run->regedit. Nogo.
I then renamed vmware.exe to lalaware.exe, and it bloody well installed!
I also found the the vmware tools installable by Run->E:\setup.exe within each vmdisk. FYI, I keep the ethernet device disconnected within the virtual machines.
The new install spotted the previous appliances, excellent.
I used the serial on this page, there was no need to run the virus-laden keygen.exe.

1) install vmware
2) get trial key from vmware
3) install a linux distro in a VM
4) install WINE in the Linux distro
5) run the keygen from WINE and put the number in your windows installation.
Threat defeated.
