Description:
Wing Commander: Privateer is an adventure space flight simulation computer game released by Origin Systems in 1993. Privateer and its storyline is part of the Wing Commander series. The characters are computer-generated, not played by actors like in many other Wing Commander games. Privateer had an add-on titled Righteous Fire (1994) that continues the story and adds additional purchasable equipment to the game.
The software features a pseudo-3D world in plain raster graphics at 320x200 with 256 colors.
The player takes the role of Grayson Burrows, a "privateer" who travels through the Gemini Sector, one of many sectors in the Wing Commander universe. Unlike Wing Commander, the player is no longer a navy pilot, but a freelancer who can choose to be a pirate, a merchant, a mercenary or any of the above in some combination. The player may follow the built-in plot but is free to adventure on his own, even after the plot has been completed.
- Includes Speech
- Includes Righteous Fire
- Requires Nero to burn - or mount with Daemon Tools
- Enjoy!

This runs great with XP using DOSBox. Under the install.exe, set your Sound Card to "Sound Blaster" only - not "Sound Blaster 16, or Sound Blaster 16 Pro"; otherwise your sound won't work.Meho Krljic (2008-02-23)
Cheers, so it's a DOS game running on DOSbox. Excellent. Thanks.lysergamideman (2009-01-27)
hmm, ok ive grown DOS dumb from being away from it so long, how can i run this in DOS mode when i try the DOS prompt fr0m windows i get "protected mode driver is not responding to EMS function calls. Make sure your EMS driver is not configured with NOEMS option" ??lysergamideman (2009-01-27)
ok, I figured it out, i thought when you said DOsbox you ment the DOS promt in XP, i didnt realize it was a program. for anyone else confused by this heres a lil more info on how to run this on xp.Yes, it has finally arrived! Several programmers have now developed a way to play Privateer (and hundreds of other DOS games too) on a Windows XP/2000 machine! I've heard numerous reports on it working, and it has worked for myself too. Here's where to get it and what to do:
1. Copy the file priv.tre (or rf.tre) from your Privateer CD to your Privateer directory on your hard drive (AFTER running the DOS-native installer, the files should show up).
2. Edit your priv.cfg (or rf.cfg) to point to the directory on your hard drive where Privateer is installed.
i.e.
Before editing the .cfg file, it looks something like this:
=D:\
After editing, it should look like:
=C:\rf.tre
3. Next, you need to Download DOSBox.
4. In "Dosbox.conf" you will see a line that says "ems=true". Set this line to "ems=false" (yes, I know it's supposed to need EMS, but apparently in the emulator it messes it up like that!)
5. Then, you need to run Dosbox. Mount the program directory like so:
- mount c c:\privater
6. For example, if your C drive had a directory called privater where Privateer was, it would show up. Then, type c: to switch to the virtual c:\privater drive.
7. Finally, run the install program. Make sure to have ONLY SOUNDBLASTER (not 16 or PRO) set to the sound. It should have an IRQ of 7.
8. Once that is accomplished you should be able to type "priv" in dosbox to run the game.
9. If you have a fast computer and it runs too slowly, try overclocking dosbox by pressing ctrl and f12 until it runs smoothly, but be careful with this.

For Linux users setting this up in dosbox is rather easier I suspect.Using xfce4+thunar on Debian Lenny, this should work just as easily in gnome or kde.
1. open up a terminal and go to the folder that contains the NRG file.
2. if you don't have them installed then install nrg2iso and dosbox through your package manager.
for debian users that's
$ apt-get install dosbox nrg2iso
3. $ nrg2iso Privateer.nrg Privateer.iso
4. Right click on the iso file and select 'Extract Here'
5. Go to the newly created Privateer directory and right click on INSTALL.EXE, select 'open with' and use dosbox.
6. Once the install has finished the will be a new folder called Privater, simply copy everything from the Privateer folder into Privater and you can just right click on PRIV.EXE and select dosbox to open it with.
Hope this helps.

D-fend Reloaded is much better I think. It is a front-end to DOSBox but inkludes DOSBox in in the download and install.Much easier to configure and comes with a lot of games pre-configured to.
Download it from here: http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/
I love it because it saves your configs for each game so all you have to do to launch the game is start D-Fend Reloaded and click on the gameicon to run it. :)
