Easy dude, there's a lot of differences between portuguese from Portugal and portuguese from Brazil. They can understand each other, but several words are different. But yes, you're right, both languages are just portuguese, without the name of the country.
But, as an example, talking about subs watching a movie in english, there's the brazilian portuguese sub and the portuguese (Portugal) sub. In an OS, the installation has Portuguese (Brazil) and Portuguese (Portugal), the keyboard layout, the same.
From a person who speaks another language, it's the same, portuguese, but for them, it's not! You don't need to offend the guy. Cheers.

I'm Portuguese. You are totally right, there are several differences in both two languages. Some times for me is a bit difficult to understand what they saying in portuguese brazilian.
