Underground S U M M A R Y : A failed reconciliation with his ex-wife. A public falling out with his mum. The murder of his best friend, D12 rapper Proof. Rumours about weight issues. And - to top it all off - an addiction to painkillers. It's fair to say Eminem's had a busy five years since the release of his last album, and he wasn't making much music. The world's best white rapper instead spent his time away from the limelight restocking his closet with as many skeletons as he could find. It may not have been a pleasant experience for him, but musically it's definitely an inspiring one. Relapse - his first studio album since 2004's jaded and lacklustre Encore - finds Eminem back to his comically controversial and fiendishly fiery best. Much of that is thanks to the fact that he's cleaning out his closet again, and it doesn't take long for the rapper also known as Slim Shady to splash around some gasoline and throw a match on those skeletons. "My mum loves Valium and lots of drugs. That's why I am like I am cause I’m like her," Eminem sings on My Mom, the album's second track that instantly addresses that drug addiction. Thanks, mum. Then there's Medicine Ball, the album's most triumphant moment which finds the fired-up rapper telling listeners, "It's time for you to hate me again," before shooting down the Pussycat Dolls, Madonna and late Superman star Christopher Reeve. The album's instant appeal also comes from producer Dr Dre, who supplies some of his best beats in years. Check out the wired atmosphere on Stay Wide Awake, the Scottish-inspired Bagpipes from Baghdad and the loping grooves of Old Time's Sake for proof. That frees Eminem up to focus on his lyrics, and there are plenty of great moments on Relapse. The murderous intonations of 3AM reference 2000 hit Stan, while the joyous celebrations of Crack a Bottle and drug-themed Hello are at the opposite end of the spectrum, but no less enjoyable. The only misstep is first single We Made You, which sounds dangerously dated with its slating of fading celebs Jessica Simpson and Kim Kardashian. It's perhaps a reflection of the amount of time it's taken Eminem to make this album. But with a follow-up slated for release later this year, Eminem hasn't been on form like this since 2000's The Marshall Mathers LP.
