with Emily Maitlis
Includes how 'Jack Bauer' and '24' may have influenced key decisions on how American torture techniques were conceived.
Tonight we bring you the first ever television interview with Lieutenant Colonel Diane Beaver. She was the lawyer who approved interrogation techniques for use on Guantanamo Bay prisoners that were new to the military and - many would say - both morally reprehensible and illegal under international law. Diane Beaver was acting with the higher authority of the Bush administration. She was a junior advocate and was under orders. So just how far up the ladder of the Bush administration did the buck stop? We take a look at the decisions which allowed sexual humiliation, sleep deprivation and waterboarding and hear how administration officials are now wide open to an international war crimes investigation........

Hope they widen their range of torture methods soon so we can get a hold of the big fishs. Torture in general is very bad, but torture of terrorists can save millions of lives. So its a good thingjack.ss (2008-05-07)
millennium5, if someone put their tools of torture into your flesh, you would probably admit to anything, including of beeing the biggest fish of them all.millennium5 (2008-05-08)
No they don.t do that, all they do is a little watarbording and sleepdeprivation, thats totally acceptable. Remember these people are terrorists and torturing tham can save millions of lives. you want you brother or sister, mom or dad or son or daugther to die just because we can't torture these monsters?jack.ss (2008-05-10)
millennium5, you said that you "Hope they widen their range of torture methods". Sounds like you want to go one step further. I think it's more than enough as it is today. Now they use all kinds of methods to break down the accused (not convicted in a court).
Even if you are found innocent and finally get realesed, you will be scared on the inside for life. What happened with beeing innocent untill proven guillty? We need justice and democracy, not injustice and tyranny.
Do you want you brother or sister, mom or dad or son or daugther to get tortured? I don't like terroristacts, but I also wouldn't like to see anybody become a torturer, or become tortured.
Good interrogation doesn't have anything to do with how much pain you inflict. It's about using mind and an ability to understand what makes a person tick.
You can't belive what people admit to under torture. One of the reasons for going to war in iraq was the information given under torture of an Al-Q member. He said that sadam and Al-Q was cooperating, when as a matter of fact they where enemies.
Nowdays there are Al-Q cells in Iraq. Isn't it ironic?
In Iraq, 100:s of thousands have been killed or injured, everyone of them have friends and relatives that starts to hate. Many of them will be future terrorists.
If you people can't be humane, at least be clever. Interrogation and investigation is superior to torture. We should catch the terrorists, not create new ones.
