Note : This was commissioned by the U.S. Army, part of a slew of movies/docs made by or produced with the help of famous directors (John Huston and Frank Capra in this case).
Some time after the start of WWII, the US armed forces decided that, even if "normal" propaganda was necessary for sustaining civilian morale and purpose, it was also important to sometimes "pull no punches" and be as honest as possible about the hardship and cruelty of combat, the better to prepare the country to the heavy losses expected during the invasion of France.
The result has, in effect, and especially seen in regard of the actual policy of "no bodies and no wounded shown", an "anti war" feel nowadays that was certainly unintended at the time...
