Ognuno dei cinque investigatori (Sam Diamante, Dick Charleston, Milo Perrier, Sidney Wang e Miss Jessica Marbles) è accompagnato da una persona (rispettivamente: la segretaria Tess Sheffington, la moglie Dora, l'autista-maggiordomo, il figlio adottato Willie e l'infermiera). In totale nella casa sono presenti questi dieci personaggi, il signor Twain, il maggiordomo cieco e la cuoca sordo-muta. Il film è una carrelata di colpi di scena e avvenimenti paradossali che nel finale lascia ancora molti punti insoluti dando però al film quella atmosfera al limite del noir.
