Description
Microsoft positions WinFLP as an operating system that will provide basic computing services on older hardware, while still providing core management features of more recent Windows releases, such as Windows Firewall, Group Policy, Automatic Updates, and other management services. Microsoft does not consider it a general-purpose OS.[1]
WinFLP is a Windows XP Embedded derivative and as such is optimized for legacy PCs.[2] It supports running applications locally, as well as those hosted on a remote server using Remote Desktop. It can be installed on a local hard drive, or configured to run on a diskless workstation.
WinFLP will not be made available through retail or OEM channels. Microsoft sees WinFLP as an inexpensive upgrade option for corporations that have a number of Windows 9x computers, but lack the hardware necessary to support the latest Windows. It is exclusively available to Software Assurance customers. WinFLP excludes Games, Outlook Express and some System Tools, even with a full install (1.1 GB)[3].
WinFLP was originally announced with codenames "Eiger" and "Mbnch" in mid-2005. Like other Microsoft Windows codenames at the time, these are names of mountains.
[edit]
Minimum system requirements
Pentium class processor 233 MHz (300 MHz recommended)
64 MB RAM (128 MB recommended)
500 MB HDD (1 GB recommended)
800x600 or higher display resolution
WARNING: don't use the unattended install unless you want to have to crack the admin accounts password with an external program... which is a real pain with VMware. just do the normal entry method and put the cd-key in, it works all fine and you can even do windows update if you want for security patches

There's another good use for an OS like this:Single-use dedicated PC's.
If you're setting up something like an In The Groove PC, this OS is a perfect backbone, as it is lightweight, compact, fast to load, and contains only the nessecary components to run your software.

I still have an old '98 era Compaq Presario. I overclocked the ol' K62 AMD Processor to almost 500mhz, and I cherish the thing. Who says you can't use old hardware? I have limited RAM though, and therefore needed a lightweight OS that still had XP functionality, this OS helps a lot. Thank you fanebabanu!0Raik (2010-09-06)
Thank you, very usefull indeed.Took me a while to figure out the Login for the first time, for all with the same trouble:
User name: ADMINISTRATOR
Password: [the one you used in the setup]
Then you change the settings, Done.

@fanebabanu: Or, instead of going to the trouble of putting in the key during install, you can just alter the values of the "unattend" XML file with a program like Notepad++. :-)deadsatan (2012-01-26)
USER NAME: ADMINISTRATORPASSWORD: (The one you used in setup)
ORaik: Thanks for posting the above info.
WinFLP: Serial Works, Updates.
Thanks to the Uploader.

Thanks for the upload. One question though: if anyone knows, please do respond.I have an Acer Aspire One D250 netbook I'm considering installing this on, with a SATA hard drive. If possible, how do I slipstream the SATA drivers into FLP so the install will detect my HD? Or do I have to disable SATA in the BIOS?
I've seen something called WinFLP InfImporter, a command-line tool that's supposed to slipstream driver *.inf files into the installation image, but am unsure of how to use it. If anyone is, or has another solution, please do leave an answer. TIA :)
