Una sera in cui i suoi genitori escono per qualche ora lasciandola sola con Toby, il fratellino di pochi mesi, questi stenta ad addormentarsi e piange: innervosita, la ragazzina invoca Jareth, il signore degli gnomi, affinchè se lo porti con sé nel suo castello. E Toby scompare davvero. Sarah impaurita decide di andarselo a riprendere, affrontando insoliti, pericolosi e difficili ostacoli di ogni genere, per ritrovarlo finalmente presso Jareth "al di là della città di Goblin". Nelle sue avventure e nei suoi incontri dal fantastico labirinto iniziale fino a porte magiche e paludi graveolenti l'accompagnano e proteggono un nano bizzarro e un po' bizzoso (Gogol), un minuscolo cavaliere sbruffone ed un bestione (Bubo), che lei ha salvato da perfidi aggressori.
