Sorry but mpeg, wmv and avi container doesn't support sub.Beside, common/decent player have no problem with matroska. If you have problem try VLC.
By the way, the mkv contain H.264, vorbis and ASS streams. So if this is for playing the file outside of your computer, i doubt it'll work, even with in an avi.
