Действието за първи път се развива не на космически кораб, а на космическа станция - изоставената от кардасианите (едни от "лошите" ) станция Терок Нор, преименувана по-късно Дълбок Космос 9, построена в орбита около планетата Бейджор, преживяла 50 годишна окупация от кардасианите. През целия сериал освен всички забавни сцени има и много сериозни епизоди, които предизвикват размисъл на теми като тероризма, религиозния фанатизъм, войната, вярата и религията като цяло. Като че ли авторите на сериала са предвидили някои от проблемите, с които човечеството ще се сблъска (с които вече се сблъска, ако искаме да сме точни). Освен всичко друго тук може би са най-интересните герои в Стар Трек като Гарак, Одо, Кира, Гул Дукат, Дамар, Сиско, Вик Фонтайн, Куарк. Интересните теми в сериала са приятелството между О`Брайън и Башир, противопоставянето между Сиско и Гул Дукат, начинът, по който религиозните бейджорци възприемат Сиско - като посланик на техните богове и за това как той най-накрая приема тази роля като своя съдба (нещо изключително нетипично за капитан от флота). Сериалът впечатлява не само с броя на интересните герои, но и с взаимоотношенията между тях, а също и с това, че повечето герои са реалистични - те не са идеалистично добри или лоши.
