Er zijn over de hele wereld maar drie exemplaren van dit satanische boek overgeleverd, maar slechts één ervan heet authentiek te zijn. Wie het juist hanteert, zou in de mogelijkheid zijn de Duivel in hoogst eigen persoon op te roepen. Om de drie boeken - en in het bijzonder, de negen geheimzinnige gravures - met elkaar te vergelijken, reist Corso van New York naar Toledo, Parijs en Sintra in Portugal. Moord en dood blijken hem daarbij te achtervolgen, net als twee raadselachtige vrouwen. De ene, Mrs. Telfer, maakt ook jacht op het boek. De andere is een zeer vreemde vrouw, die hem steeds lijkt te beschermen. English Dean Corso, a rare book dealer, is appointed by a renowned book collector, Balkan, to verify the authenticity of one of his books.
