BBC Four - Storyville - Prostitution Behind the Veil (Iran 2006)

Prostitution Behind the Veil explores a side of Iran rarely seen or talked about. For over a year, director Nahid Persson filmed the everyday lives of two young female prostitutes in Iran as they eked out a living in a country where the profession is banned. The filmmaker often took great risks to follow Minna and Fariba as they sought out customers-men who would often marry them briefly, so as not to violate the laws of Islam by having extramarital sex. The two women are good friends and neighbor, who have experienced the widespread mistreatment of women and the double standards that permeate Iranian society today. In the '80s, documentary filmmaker Nahid Persson fled Iran for Sweden. When she returns 17 years later, she finds the divisions between the classes greater than ever, unemployment has skyrocketed and widespread disillusionment provides a lucrative market for an elderly man, Habib, who sells prophecies on the streets. Persson decided to film this "prophecy merchant" and his customers. And when she went with him to his run-down house, she was both shocked and intrigued to discover he shares his accommodation with Minna and Fariba, who are also heroin addicts. Putting herself at great risk, Persson manages to film Minna and Fariba's customers. She even gets into cars or apartments where they discuss what services the girls are prepared to provide and what it will cost. Their children are their constant companions, and on one occasion one customer looks after Minna's child while another man has sex with her in an adjoining room. Many of the women's customers find a way to buy sex and still comply with Muslim law: they marry with the women in what is called 'sighe'-a temporary marriage legal in Shia Islam. 'Sighe' can last from two hours up to 99 years.In the documentary, both Minna and Fariba undergo 'sighe' with customers. Habib offers his perspective on temporary marriages: to him, 'sighe' is a way of helping miserable women-an act of mercy done in the name of God. I don't know if I will like the tone this film is made in but if there is something bad going on in Iran it's of course good to bring it out into the open so it might be stopped!

I saw this movie on TV some time ago, and the people in the doc are (of course) speaking farsi and not english that is stated in the torrents' summary. I saw this video but I'm not sure if I got it here or at Mininova. It was a good documentary exposing how bad women are treated in Iran. I think it was all english subs but maybe the narrator was english speaking too.

what i think is that religion just limits the view to life and provides the answers that give us the relaxed life! it is the way to forget the questions that matter!
God is the source... God is the creator... God is...
i think Prostitution is not caused by religion, you see that all religions stand against Prostitution. but if a country is ruled over by religious leaders, it goes underground! and when discovered, gets punishment!!!
isn't the the same with all religions, either Christianity, Islam, Judaism or any other?
what if we men did not rule the world?
what if humanity was the criteria not religion?!

knght - I sort of agree with you but in the case of Islam women are second class citizens because of the Koran. Sure some can try to say the same thing about the Bible but the Bible says that men and women are equal. In the Koran and teachings of Islam the man is superior in all ways. This video demonstrates how this plays out in real life. Men can mistreat a woman and do whatever they want and the woman just has to obey and deal with it. Being able to marry a woman for a day or less is totally degrading of woman and totally strays from the concept of fidelity and chastity. This goes to show how messed up Islam is. Not surprising when the author of the religion is the Devil.

At the very least Islam has not proven a reasonable model for civilized success.

Islamic countries demonstrate the worst abuse of women.
Freedom of speech doesn't exist.
Wherever Islam goes all non-Islamic culture and belief is destroyed. Art, libraries, architecture, are all destroyed if non-Islamic.

Abd al-Wahhab & Ibn Saud's Islamic Arabia, and
Tamerlane's Islamic Asia,
These empires fit together like puzzle pieces.
Islam has always been a fertile ground for the rise of ultra extremist militant fascist movements.
Wherever Islam goes in the world violent militant extremists magically appear as well.
These problems find their roots in the books, teachings and examples of Islamic leaders from the very beginning.
And don't try to apologize for these fascist Islamic empires by saying every country has it's problems; it would be like apologizing for Ted Bundy & Jeffrey Dahmer by claiming everybody has their problems.

this film is about what's happening in Iran but it doesn't show or mean that it is the way of Islam...
for those who don't know, Iran has their own deviated religion called "shiism" which hides from the name of Islam, to destroy the name of Islam as we can see from the understandings of others.. but i say again, Shiism, a religion in Iran is NOT Islam...
