Jon Stewart's catapult to fame on Comedy Central's satiric news television program The Daily Show has made him one of America's top social and comedic voices. After graduating from the College of William and Mary, Stewart adopted the stage name "Jon Stewart" and tried his hand at comedy in the New York City club circuit. His success with standup landed Stewart his first TV job as a writer for Caroline's Comedy Hour. This led to various on-air and sometimes short-lived hosting stints until finally landing his own talk show at MTV. The Jon Stewart Show was the first talk show on that network and was an instant hit. In 1999, Stewart moved to Comedy Central where he began hosting, writing and co-producing The Daily Show. The show steadily gained popularity and critical acclaim for its political satire and incisive humour emerging as one of the most popular programs on cable television.
