I've seen this movie before. It is truly under-appreciated. Charlie Chaplin was going against the grain when he made this movie, criticizing the one and only Adolf Hitler. It's message is still completely valid today.

wtf!!! anyone who says this movie is lame should get themselves checked... this talkie was the greatest triumph for Chaplin... as much as the movie was relevant in WWII era, it hasn't dated one bit... The Great Dictator along with Duck Soup stands tall against dictatorship.

jeromedevine, you're a dumb ass... with all due respect. If you expect a simple comedy and just to laugh at sketches, then you'll be greatly dissapointed.
But if you see it in it's right context, at the very start of the second world war, then you might understand the movie.
On imdb.com, the rating is 8.5, and I think that's a bit low.
Hitler died in 1945... this movie will live forever!

The movie is that of Anti-Nazi, but then again it was the first of its kind. It was before we knew WW2 was gonna cost 10s of millions of lives.
Compare it to Inglorious Bastards who got a higher score on IMDb, within the same "genre".
And then remember this was made about 70 years before that one! That's like meeting a caveman who got higher download speeds than you.
I simply can't see whats naive about it? Both He and the movie were well ahead of their time.
