Sent with his specially trained Afrika Korps to stem the Italian retreat, Rommel succeeded in driving the British back into Egypt and at one point penetrating to within 66 miles of Alexandria. The fighting ebbed and flowed across North Africa in 1941 and 1942, until the great British victory at El Alamein in November 1942 forced Rommel to retreat towards Tunisia and eventually from North Africa.
