This is one of the most atmospheric films I've ever seen! Probably the greatest haunted house film ever done, a classic horror tale that slowly draws you in, scary, chilling, way more terrifying than all the mindless Hostel, Saw...you name it crap flicks that are labelled as horror nowadays. Their scare factor is determined by the amount of sheer gore/splatter the director can come up with, explicit violence in all its glory just for the sake of reveling in violence and torture, and not to forget the latest sicko fantasies they can think up just to spark controversy. This mindnumbing crap has polluted the horror genre these days, with its countless sequels, remakes and copycats. Leave your imagination at the door and we'll spoonfed you with our brand of visual overkill and cheap shocking effects.
The Changeling on the other hand has all the right ingredients, it's an example of filmmaking 101: Emphasis on dramaturgy and script development, beautiful cinematography, a haunting film score and great acting. This is a masterpiece, highly recommended and should be better known, esp. to a modern horror audience.
