In Vietnam geraakt Kovic zwaar gewond door een kogel in de ruggengraat en vertellen de dokters hem dat hij nooit meer zal kunnen lopen. Ron aanvaardt het oordeel niet en oefent dwangmatig zijn onderste ledematen.
