Back to their °Û Û° old styles, with some really keen new styles (first track °Û Û° almost reminds me of Brainbug's style, but with more kick °Û Û° and some kooky vocals). And if you're not sure if you want °Û Û° to spend the moments to grab this before it hits stores °Û Û° (Januart 28th or 29th), at least grab "Hoops" my fave track °Û Û° (close second is My Elastic Eye, starting off sounding a bit °Û Û° like Vespertine era Bjork). Other artists this album may °Û Û° have been inspired by are Basement Jaxx, Rooty era with a °Û Û° nice bouncy dance feel to parts of this album. For someone °Û Û° else's words, here's a pretty good review (but Daft Punk as °Û Û° Baroque Pop? And there are no vocals on 'Pioneer Skies' its °Û Û° 'The Test' which features Ashcroft). °Û Û° °Û Û° "Tom and Ed return with their fourth album, 'Come With Us', °Û Û° a joyous romp that strikes back to the heart of the Chemical °Û Û° sound clash. °Û Û° °Û Û° Arriving on the arpeggio string arrangement of the title °Û Û° track, you could be forgiven for thinking for an instant °Û Û° that the Chemicals have followed Daft Punk into Baroque pop °Û Û° territory. °Û Û° °Û Û° The thought is foolish and short lived. °Û Û° °Û Û° After their brief classical intermission, the Brothers dust °Û Û° down their trademark surging beast of beats and spiralling °Û Û° synth sounds, disinter a dark vocal sample, intoning "Behold °Û Û° We're Coming Back", and deliver a scorching guitar and bass °Û Û° synth laced 'Social' break beat. °Û Û° °Û Û° As an indication of what is to come it's powerful and °Û Û° poignant, boldly re-stating the no-holds barred approach °Û Û° that originally made the Chemical Brothers stand out. °Û Û° °Û Û° Lest it be forgotten, not only did the Chemicals break the °Û Û° mould in the mid Nineties by being a dance outfit that °Û Û° embraced indie acts, they also espoused an anything goes °Û Û° philosophy that utilised rock guitar, thundering hip hop °Û Û° drums, scorching acidic 303, African beats and, as they do °Û Û° here, classical string arrangements. °Û Û° °Û Û° Rising through repeated aural assaults, break beat break °Û Û° downs and a quirky Leo Nocentelli funky guitar line, 'Come °Û Û° With Us' charges like a genetically modified funk rock rhino °Û Û° into the tribal trance of last year's single, 'It Began In °Û Û° Africa'. °Û Û° °Û Û° 'Africa' is competent but next to the engaging, °Û Û° work-in-progress quirky funk of 'Galaxy Bounce', it seems °Û Û° straight. All of which makes the appeal of the soon to be °Û Û° released 'Star Guitar' single more odd. °Û Û° °Û Û° Combining a slightly tweaked house drum pattern with gushing °Û Û° swells of trance synth lines and an ambient, occasionally °Û Û° Balearic, feel, the formulae here is far from original. But °Û Û° it's won applause wherever it's been played. Once again the °Û Û° secret of its success is in the production, where the °Û Û° endemic fragility of the song is given depth by the °Û Û° contrastingly harsh drum sounds. °Û Û° °Û Û° But perhaps the greatest achievement of 'Come With Us' is °Û Û° its stamina, with one of the most interesting contributions, °Û Û° the multi textural 'Hoops', only coming half way through the °Û Û° playing order. It may not be the obvious single, but it's °Û Û° probably the album's finest moment. °Û Û° °Û Û° 'My Elastic Eye' again collides the delicate and ephemeral °Û Û° with harsh electronica, and with more devastating effect °Û Û° than the comparatively safe 'Star Guitar'. °Û Û° °Û Û° The theme of organic fragility jutted against electronic °Û Û° energy is repeated in Beth Ortan's plaintive vocals on 'The °Û Û° State We're In', in which she struggles against keyboards °Û Û° and effects that in anybody else's studio would have been °Û Û° too high in the mix. Here it seems to work. °Û Û° °Û Û° Juxtaposed to this comes 'Denmark', a bass driven disco °Û Û° stomp that clatters along on early Nineties Knuckle's wood °Û Û° blocks before the full drum kit takes over the percussion °Û Û° and a bass drill pounds into the 'Pig Bag' bass line. °Û Û° °Û Û° Further pushing the boundaries, 'Pioneer Skies', an °Û Û° awesomely large production for its length, sounds like pure °Û Û° Pete Townshend circa his 'Who's Next' prog era. °Û Û° °Û Û° Finally the plodding drum rolls of 'Pioneer Skies', °Û Û° (should be 'The Test', looks like a minor error on the editor's side) °Û Û° featuring Richard Ashcroft, offer the album's largest olive °Û Û° branch to the unrepentant unconverted. °Û Û° °Û Û° Unlike their recent offerings, 'Come With Us' doesn't rely °Û Û° on collaborations to cross over into different markets. Nor °Û Û° does it turn out tub-thumping dance music to capture the °Û Û° club contingent. °Û Û° °Û Û° Rather, like their earlier offerings, it matches big sound °Û Û° crowd-pleasing gimmicks with the cerebrally challenging and °Û Û° adventurous. It exposes the unmatched raw nerve of Chemical °Û Û° Brothers' production and spikes it with innovation. °Û Û° °Û Û° A subtly brutal and powerfully fragile masterpiece." -- Ben Osborne °Û Û° °Û Û° And if you're not sure if this is the real thing, there's °Û Û° the CD (mail me a scanner if you want a scan). Dismiss this °Û Û° as "merely a promo" if you want, but the CD is only stamped °Û Û° with the "promo only" mark, as seen on anything sent to radio °Û Û° stations. No covers, that's how I got it.
