Description:

1966 ABC-TV. "Truman Capote's A Christmas Memory" with GERALDINE PAGE, DONNIE MELVIN. Narrated by TRUMAN CAPOTE. In color. Emmy Award winning adaptation of Capote's recollection of his youth in the rural South during the Depression. Living with a slightly dotty but loving "cousin," Capote remembers back to when he was about 10 years old and it was suddenly decided that "it was fruitcake weather." The task of baking 30 cakes for mostly far-away friends and the other rituals of Christmas time are painted with such loving and nostalgic strokes, this becomes a truly beautiful Christmas experience. The poverty of the 1930s fails to stop or even slow down a loving relationship at a loving time of the year. An Emmy Award well deserved!

There's no audio.

Audio works fine. I have been looking for this for my wife for years. This used to run in N. Carolina every Christmas. The video quality isn't the best (probably from a home VHS tape) but watchable. A giant thanks to the original seeder!

Why is it that when I watch this on my computer there is sound, but when I burn it to DVD there is no sound? Any suggestions?

Apart from the insipid child who plays Buddy, this is a truly memorable production. Geraldine Page is magnificent and the whole production has a special glow. It never looked great - there's a hazy look to it and I think the original was shot on 16mm. While it used to be occasionally shown during the holidays during the 1970s and 1980s, when I taped it, it seems to have been withdrawn from circulation once the lackluster remake hit the airwaves. Christmas isn't complete for me without seeing those two kites flying high on the wintry breeze.
