Codec packs are evil. Instead of getting a pack (which usually is out of date by the time you install it) just make sure you're connected to the net before playing a media file. Your player should download the correct (and current) codec.

If the video is running choppy that most likely means that your pc can't handle it, if the codec or player was at fault, it wouldn't play at all or give an error at the beginning.
